What is a Medium Rigid (MR) Licence?

A Medium Rigid (MR) licence allows you to drive trucks and buses with up to two axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8 tonnes, but not exceeding 15 tonnes.

 

This licence is essential for anyone looking to operate Delivery Trucks, Tipper Trucks, or Small Buses professionally.

Who needs an MR Licence?

If you want to drive Medium Rigid trucks on the roads, a MR Truck licence is mandatory. It’s also the first step toward progressing to Heavy Rigid (HR) or Heavy Combination (HC) licences in the future.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To apply for an MR licence in Queensland, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Have held your Car Licence (min. Red P Plates) for a period of 12 months before upgrading to an MR Licence.

  • Have completed the Heavy Vehicle theory test with the Department of Transport, which can be done before, or on the day of your practical driving test.

  • Complete a Practical MR Truck Training and Assessment with a Queensland Transport Examiner.

The Course

With Mareeba Truck School, you have the choice to complete your Medium Rigid (MR) Truck Licence in either Mareeba, Atherton, Cooktown, Hopevale or Weipa, with lessons starting and finishing at the respective Department of Transport offices.

How can I get started?

  1. Contact us via Phone or Email to discuss your training needs and options available.

  2. Practice and then Complete the Queensland Heavy Vehicle Theory Test. This can be done before or on your assessment date.

  3. Book your Practical Training in with us, and we'll book your Assessment with the Department of Transport Examiner.

  4. Complete your Training Lessons and pass your MR Licence Assessment with the Examiner.

  5. Drive Confidently and Safely on Aussie roads with your new MR licence!

The Queensland Department of Transport offers a free Practice Road Rules test on their website. Access it by clicking the button below.

What will I be able to do after passing?

After passing the practical driving test, you will end up with a MR (Condition B) Synchro Licence.

 

You will be able to drive a truck, van or bus (including a prime mover or a mobile crane) over 8t GVM with a maximum of 2 axles (1 at rear) and you are also permitted to tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 9t GVM.
