You have two options when completing your HR Licence. You can choose to complete training for a Restricted HR Licence in either an Automatic/Syncromesh Truck (Automatic or Manual, just like a normal Car), otherwise for an Unrestricted HR Licence, you can complete the training in a Road Ranger Geared Truck (Crash Box). Car to Restricted Heavy Rigid (HR) in an Automatic and Syncromesh Truck
What is a Restricted Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence?
A Restricted Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence allows you to drive trucks and buses with Automatic or Manual (Synchromesh) Gearboxes with:

Two or more axles

A Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8 tonnes

A trailer up to 9 tonnes GVM
With a Restricted HR Licence, you can drive some of the biggest rigid vehicles on the road, including:

Heavy Rigid Trucks

Large Buses and Coaches

Prime Movers (without trailers)

Construction vehicles like Tippers and Concrete Trucks
Who needs a HR Licence?
If you’re looking to drive Heavy Rigid vehicles for work then a HR truck licence from Mareeba Truck School is essential. It’s also the perfect stepping stone if you plan to upgrade to a Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) licence in the future.
What are the eligibility requirements?
To apply for a Restricted HR Licence in Queensland, you must:

Have held your Car Licence (min. Green P Plates) for a period of 24 months before upgrading to an HR Licence.

Have completed the Heavy Vehicle theory test with the Department of Transport, which can be done before, or on the day of your practical driving test.

Complete a Practical HR Truck Training and Assessment with a Queensland Transport Examiner.

The Course
With Mareeba Truck School, you have the choice to complete your Restricted Heavy Rigid (HR) Truck Licence in either Mareeba, Atherton, Cooktown, Hopevale or Weipa, with lessons starting and finishing at the respective Department of Transport offices.

- Heavy Rigid (HRA): Condition A - Automatic Gearboxes Only
- Heavy Rigid (HRB): Condition B - Synchromesh (Single Clutch, same as a Manual Car) and Automatic Gearboxes Only

What will I be able to do after passing?
After passing the practical driving test, you will end up with a Restricted HR Licence. The type of Licence (Condition A or B) you will receive will depend on the type you had previously. Our trucks are Automatic and Synchromesh, so if you have done your Car Licence in a manual or if you pass your test in the synchromesh truck, you will be automatically upgraded to a Condition B HR Licence. If you have done your Car Licence in an Automatic, you will receive a Condition A HR Licence.
You will be able to drive a truck, van or bus (including a prime mover, mobile crane or an articulated bus) over 8t GVM with 2 or more axles and you are also permitted to tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 9t GVM.

What is an Unrestricted Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence?
An Unrestricted Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence allows you to drive trucks and buses with Road Ranger Gearboxes (Crash Box) with:
